How to Improve Online Bookings in High Season (Tourism in Argentina)

7 concrete fixes so your lodge, restaurant, or cabin doesn't lose bookings in high season. Performance, WhatsApp, local SEO, and the typical mistakes that cost bookings every single day.

High season is the biggest opportunity of the year for a tourism business in Argentina. It's also when your website gets the most real traffic, the most visitors with intent to buy, and the most chances to lose that traffic to mistakes that go unnoticed the rest of the year.

These are the 7 adjustments that make the difference between capturing the booking or handing it to your competitor.

1. Load speed is the first barrier

In high season, most searches come from mobile, often with mediocre connectivity (highways, places with weak WiFi, planes with limited data). If your site takes more than 3 seconds to load, you lose around half your visitors before they see the first photo.

The two metrics that matter:

  • LCP (Largest Contentful Paint): under 2.5 seconds. It's how long it takes for the main image or headline to appear.
  • INP (Interaction to Next Paint): under 200ms. It's how long it takes to respond when someone taps a button.

How to improve them: optimize images (modern formats like WebP/AVIF, explicit dimensions, lazy loading), reduce unnecessary JavaScript, serve static HTML from a CDN. That last one is the most important and almost nobody does it.

2. WhatsApp visible, on every page

In Argentina, most tourism bookings are still confirmed over WhatsApp, not through a form. People want to ask about availability, send odd questions, haggle, send voice notes. If your only contact channel is a form, you've lost half your audience before you start.

What works:

  • A floating WhatsApp button always visible, on every page.
  • A direct link to wa.me/<yournumber> with a predefined message like "Hi, I'd like to ask about availability for the weekend of the 15th". That saves the person the awkward first message.
  • A response in under 1 hour during peak times. If you can't, hire someone or automate a first reply. People who don't get a response within 4 hours book somewhere else.

3. Photos: heavy but fast

A lodge without beautiful photos doesn't sell. But heavy photos are the #1 cause of slow sites. The solution isn't to have fewer photos, it's to serve them well:

  • Modern formats: AVIF and WebP, not JPEG. They weigh 30% to 50% less without losing quality.
  • Correct dimensions per device. A photo shown at 800px shouldn't weigh as much as a 4000px one.
  • Lazy loading. Photos further down only load when the user scrolls there.
  • Prioritized hero image. The first photo loads with priority, the rest wait.

With a well-optimized site you can have 20-30 high-quality photos on a page and still load in under 2 seconds.

4. Clear information, fast decision

People booking in high season have little patience. If your site doesn't answer these questions in the first 30 seconds, they leave:

  • How much does it cost? (approximate range, not "ask for price")
  • What date do I have available? (calendar or "ask on WhatsApp", the latter if you don't have a booking system)
  • What's included? (breakfast, parking, pets, kids, etc.)
  • How do I get there? (map, distance from downtown or the airport)
  • What's the cancellation policy?

If one of these answers requires "ask on WhatsApp", that's fine, but the rest should be in plain sight. People compare 4-5 options quickly, and whoever hides information gets dropped first.

5. Local SEO: showing up on Google Maps

When someone searches for "lodge in Esquel" or "cabins in Bariloche", the first 3 results that appear are from Google's Map Pack (the ones on the little map). Whoever appears there captures most of the bookings. To get in:

  • Complete Google Business Profile. Correct category, verified address, hours, updated photos, weekly posts.
  • Real reviews. Ask every customer who enjoyed their stay to leave a review. 50+ reviews with 4.5+ stars does half the SEO work for you.
  • Schema.org on the site. Structured data like LodgingBusiness or Restaurant that explicitly tells Google what kind of business you are.
  • Consistent NAP. Name, Address, Phone identical on the site, on Google Business, and in any directory where you appear.

This doesn't get fixed the week before the season, it takes 2-3 months to see results. That's why the time to start is now, not in December.

6. Mobile-first, for real

More than 75% of tourism traffic comes from mobile. Yet most small tourism business sites are still designed to look good on desktop and "adapt" to mobile. That doesn't work.

The minimum checks:

  • Buttons big enough to tap with a finger (44px minimum area).
  • Readable text without zooming in (16px minimum).
  • Short forms, with the right keyboard (numeric for phone, email for mail).
  • No popups covering the whole screen.
  • Navigation that works one-handed.

Run your site through PageSpeed Insights in mobile mode and see what it says. If the mobile score is below 80, you're already leaving money on the table.

7. Measure what happens, don't just assume

Most small tourism businesses don't even have Google Analytics set up. That means in February, when the season ends, they won't know what worked and what didn't. The minimum:

  • Microsoft Clarity (free). It shows you real recordings of how people use your site. You'll discover things you'd never imagine: where they get stuck, what they read, where they leave.
  • Google Analytics 4 or Plausible. To see where traffic comes from and which pages work.
  • WhatsApp with labels. Tag inquiries by source ("came from the site", "came from Instagram") to understand which channel brings better bookings.
  • Tracked bookings. Even if it's in a spreadsheet, record how many inquiries turned into bookings and what the average ticket was. Without this, you can't improve.

The most common mistake

The mistake we see most on tourism sites is investing in pretty design and neglecting the technical side. A beautiful website that loads in 5 seconds and doesn't show up on Google Maps will lose to an ugly website that loads in 1 second and is well positioned. High season doesn't forgive slowness or invisibility.
